About this Recovery House

Spartan House is a men's recovery residence on Washington Street East in Charleston, West Virginia, the state capital and seat of Kanawha County. Fourteen men live here at $500 a month, certified at Level 2 by the West Virginia Alliance of Recovery Residences.

A Men's Sober House on Washington Street East

Washington Street East runs the length of Charleston from downtown through the East End and out toward Kanawha City, one of the city's principal corridors. Fourteen beds is enough for a working household with real accountability. The address puts a resident within walking distance of the Capitol complex and a short bus ride from the county courthouse.

What Level 2 Certification Establishes

Level 2 in West Virginia's framework describes monitored recovery housing with structured expectations, where clinical services come from providers elsewhere in the city. Certification commits the house to a published code of ethics, written disclosure of fees and rules before move-in, a written relapse and discharge policy, and complaints reviewed outside the household. Since 2024 the state has made certification the condition for referrals and public funding.

The Move-In Fee and What It Covers

A non-refundable $375 move-in fee covers the first three weeks, with $500 a month afterward. A man arriving from treatment knows exactly what the first payment buys and when the next one falls due.

Medication-Assisted Recovery in This Kanawha County Recovery Home

Residents on medication for opioid use disorder are accepted at both of the operator's addresses. Charleston carries the broadest prescribing base in southern West Virginia.

Charleston's East End and Men's Recovery Housing

The East End holds the state Capitol, a hospital campus, a walkable commercial strip and a dense grid of older housing served by Kanawha Valley Regional Transportation. The Kanawha County Courthouse and family court are downtown a short ride west. Kanawha County holds the largest concentration of certified recovery residences in West Virginia, and a man rebuilding a routine here can hold work, a court date and an appointment inside one city.
