About this Recovery House

The Southern Highlands RISE Recovery Residence is a men's sober living home in Bluefield, West Virginia, in Mercer County, on Shenandoah Street. Ten men live here under Level 2 certification from the West Virginia Alliance of Recovery Residences.

A Ten-Bed Men's Recovery Home in Bluefield

Ten beds in a city that carries a substantial share of southern West Virginia's certified recovery housing. The residence is operated by Southern Highlands, one of the state's regional comprehensive behavioral health centers, which means the clinical services a resident needs sit inside the same organization that houses him. Shenandoah Street runs through Bluefield's residential grid away from the downtown railroad district.

What Level 2 Certification Establishes

Level 2 describes monitored recovery housing with structured expectations, where clinical services come from providers elsewhere. Certification obliges the residence to disclose fees and rules in writing before move-in, keep a written relapse and discharge policy, follow a published code of ethics, and accept complaints reviewed outside the house. Since 2024, West Virginia has made certification the condition for state referrals and public funding.

What It Costs to Move In

A $400 deposit is due at the time of admission.

Bluefield, Princeton and Mercer County

Bluefield is the largest city in Mercer County, built by the Norfolk and Western railroad against the Virginia state line, with its twin of the same name across the border. Princeton, ten miles north, is the county seat and holds the courthouse and Princeton Community Hospital. The city serves as the commercial center for a wide stretch of southern West Virginia and southwest Virginia.

Recovery Housing in the Southern Coalfields

The coalfield counties around Mercer carry the highest overdose rates in the United States and among the fewest certified recovery beds. Bluefield holds several certified residences from different operators, which makes it one of the few places in the region where a man leaving treatment has more than one option without relocating to Charleston or Beckley.
