Lester is a small town in the southern end of Raleigh County, in the coalfield country between Beckley and the Wyoming County line. Twelve beds here puts certified recovery housing within reach of men whose families and court obligations are in the coalfields. The operator runs a women's house of the same size a short drive south in Mullens.

Income-Based Fees and Donated Beds

Residents pay sixty percent of their income, and the operator maintains beds funded by donations. That structure means a man arriving from treatment with no earnings is not automatically turned away, and a man working part time is not paying more than he has.

Level 2 Certification in Rural Recovery Housing

Level 2 covers monitored recovery housing with structured expectations and clinical care from outside providers. Certification requires written fee and rule disclosure before move-in, a written relapse and discharge policy, and complaints reviewed outside the residence. West Virginia has required all recovery residences to register with the state since 2024 and tied referrals and public funds to certification.

Lester, Beckley and the Southern Coalfields

Raleigh County stretches from Beckley in the north down into the coalfields around Lester and Sophia. Beckley is the county seat and the commercial center of southern West Virginia, holding the courthouse, Raleigh General Hospital, the Beckley VA Medical Center and New River Community and Technical College, about half an hour north. The surrounding counties carry the highest overdose rates in the United States and almost no certified beds of their own.
