About Sound Mind

Sound Mind is a sober living operator running two certified recovery residences in southern West Virginia, a women's house in Mullens and a men's house in Lester. Both charge sixty percent of a resident's income and hold twelve beds, and both carry Level 2 certification from the West Virginia Alliance of Recovery Residences.

A Southern Coalfields Recovery Housing Provider

Wyoming and Raleigh counties sit in the heart of West Virginia's southern coalfields, the region with the highest overdose rates in the United States and among the fewest certified recovery beds. Sound Mind runs one house in each, a few miles apart across the county line, which gives the southern coalfields a men's and a women's option without either resident having to relocate to Beckley or Charleston.

Sound Mind Recovery Homes

  • Sound Mind for Women on Black Eagle Road in Mullens, twelve beds in Wyoming County.
  • Sound Mind for Men on Gwinn Street in Lester, twelve beds in Raleigh County.

Income-Based Fees and Donated Beds

Residents pay sixty percent of their income, and the operator also maintains beds whose cost can be covered by donations. Income-based pricing means the charge tracks what someone actually earns, and a donation-covered bed means a person with no income at all is not automatically excluded. In counties where full-time wages sit well below the state average, that structure decides who can be housed.

Men's and Women's Sober Houses in the Coalfields

Each house is single gender and each holds twelve beds. Certified women's capacity is scarcer than men's across West Virginia and scarcest of all in the southern coalfields, so twelve beds in Wyoming County is a substantial share of what the region has.

Certification and Medication Policy

Both residences hold Level 2 certification from the West Virginia Alliance of Recovery Residences, the state's affiliate of the National Alliance for Recovery Residences, and both accept residents on medication for opioid use disorder.
