About this Recovery House

The Highland House is a women's sober living home on Highland Avenue in Bluefield, West Virginia, in Mercer County. Nine women live here at no cost, under Level 2 certification from the West Virginia Alliance of Recovery Residences, operated by Community Action of South Eastern West Virginia.

A Free Women's Recovery Home in the Southern Coalfields

Nine beds, women only, no fee. Certified women's capacity is the scarcest category of recovery housing in West Virginia, and in the coalfield counties it is scarcer still. A residence that removes the cost entirely means a woman leaving treatment with no savings and no job is not excluded on day one, which is the point at which most placements fail.

What Level 2 Certification Establishes

Level 2 describes monitored recovery housing with structured expectations, where clinical services come from providers elsewhere. Certification obliges the residence to disclose its rules in writing before move-in, keep a written relapse and discharge policy, follow a published code of ethics, and accept complaints reviewed outside the house. It sits a step above the operator's larger peer-run residence downtown.

Vouchers and Medication Policy

Beds are eligible for Recovery Housing Program vouchers covering the first forty-five days for new residents meeting federal low-income guidelines. All FDA-approved medications for opioid use disorder and stimulant use disorder are accepted.

Highland Avenue and Bluefield Recovery Housing

Highland Avenue runs through Bluefield's older residential district above the downtown railroad grade, and it carries more certified recovery beds than any other street in Mercer County, from this operator and from others. That concentration gives residents something rare in the coalfields: a neighborhood where recovery housing is ordinary.

Bluefield, Princeton and Mercer County

Bluefield is the largest city in Mercer County, on the Virginia line, with Princeton as the county seat ten miles north holding the courthouse and Princeton Community Hospital. The city serves as the commercial center for a wide stretch of southern West Virginia and southwest Virginia, and its certified recovery housing draws from both sides of the border.
