About this Sober House

The Able House is a men's sober living home on St. James Avenue in the McKnight section of Springfield, Massachusetts, in Hampden County. It holds MASH certification at NARR Level II, with capacity for ten residents, and is operated by The Able Place Inc.

A Men's Sober House in McKnight

The McKnight neighborhood sits close to Springfield Technical Community College and American International College, and residents at this house have access to both schools along with the city's transit network.

Respectable, Accountable, Dependable

The Able Place Inc built the house's name around the qualities it wants residents to carry: respectable, accountable and dependable. That framing sets the tone for the two requirements the operator treats as conditions of staying: participation in a 12-step program and holding a job.

A Working House

Employment is mandatory for residents here, and the Able Place Inc describes the house explicitly as a working household. Combined with required 12-step participation, the house is built for men who already have, or are actively pursuing, somewhere to be during the day.

What NARR Level II Certification Covers

Certification through the Massachusetts Alliance for Sober Housing requires the operator to publish a code of ethics, disclose fees and house rules in writing, and maintain a documented relapse and discharge policy at every address it runs, including this one.

One of Two Able House Locations

This St. James Avenue house is the men's counterpart to a second Able House address for women on Bowdoin Street, also in McKnight. The Able Place Inc runs both under the same name and the same standards.
