About this Sober House

The Able House is a women's sober living home on Bowdoin Street in the McKnight section of Springfield, Massachusetts, in Hampden County. It holds MASH certification at NARR Level II, with capacity for ten residents, and is operated by The Able Place Inc.

A Women's Sober House in McKnight

McKnight is one of Springfield's historic residential neighborhoods, and its location puts residents within reach of Springfield Technical Community College and American International College, along with the city's public transportation network.

What the Able House Name Stands For

The Able Place Inc named the house for the qualities it expects its residents to embody: respectable, accountable and dependable. That naming choice doubles as the house's operating philosophy, and it shows up in what the program requires day to day.

Twelve-Step Participation and Employment

Residents at the Able House are required to participate in local 12-step programs and to hold a job, both conditions the operator treats as necessary for continued residency. Springfield has an established 12-step community, and the employment requirement means the house functions as a working household.

NARR Level II Certification

Certification through the Massachusetts Alliance for Sober Housing commits the Able Place Inc to a published code of ethics, disclosed fees and rules, and a documented relapse and discharge policy at each of its addresses.

Part of a Two-House Springfield Operator

The Bowdoin Street house is paired with a second Able House address for men on St. James Avenue, also in the McKnight section. A family with both a son and a daughter in recovery can work with a single organization for both placements.
