About this Sober House
Link House is a residential sober living program for men in downtown Newburyport, Massachusetts, in Essex County. Link House, Inc. runs the twenty-man program as its original, namesake property, licensed and partially funded through the Massachusetts Department of Public Health's Bureau of Substance Abuse Services.
The Organization's Original Sober House for Men
Link House was the first program the organization ever ran, and it remains its namesake property. Twenty men live there at a time in a highly structured, intensive residential program, located in the heart of downtown Newburyport within walking distance of stores, the hospital, medical offices, houses of worship and the city's river-beach parks.
State Licensure Through the Bureau of Substance Abuse Services
Link House is licensed and partially funded through the Massachusetts Department of Public Health's Bureau of Substance Abuse Services, a different credential from the Massachusetts Alliance for Sober Housing certification that some independent sober houses carry. That licensure ties the program's funding and oversight directly to the state.
Twenty-Four-Hour Supervision Over Roughly Six Months
Residents contract to abstain from substances, attend 12-step meetings, and take part in daily individual and group counseling delivered on site, under 24-hour supervision. Most men complete the program in about six months, though some stay longer when they need it.
Downtown Newburyport's Access to Services
Newburyport's downtown puts residents within walking distance of the hospital, medical offices, the YWCA and public transportation, which matters for a program built around daily on-site counseling.
Link House, Inc.'s Network in Essex County
Link House is one of four residential programs the organization runs across Amesbury, Newburyport and Salisbury. Progress House, in Amesbury, offers a similar structure for men further along in recovery, while the Maris Center and WISH serve women at different levels of structure.
Sober living homes are group residences for people who are recovering from addiction. In most instances, people who live in sober homes have to follow certain house rules and contribute to the home by doing chores. Most importantly, residents must stay sober throughout their stay in the home.
Our original and namesake program, the Link House, is a highly structured, intensive residential treatment program for men who have recently achieved sobriety. Link House residents contract to abstain from all drug and alcohol use and addictive behaviors, attend appropriate 12-step meetings and participate fully in all additional aspects of treatment. Most residents complete the program in six months, but some may stay longer if needed. Residents focus exclusively on recovery for the initial five months, with a full, daily schedule of individual and group counseling provided onsite, and attend therapeutic, medical and legal appointments in the community. Residents are encouraged to fully integrate into the geographical through community service. After five months at the Link House, clients may seek employment, saving toward their next steps following completion of the program. Link House provides 24-hour supervision for residents.
