Operation Stand Down Rhode Island

About Operation Stand Down Rhode Island

Operation Stand Down Rhode Island is a veterans' housing provider running recovery homes and supportive housing across Rhode Island.

Thirty Years of Veteran Services

Operation Stand Down Rhode Island is an independent 501(c)(3) founded in 1993 and headquartered in Johnston. It describes itself as the state's primary nonprofit resource for homeless and at-risk veterans, and it treats a roof as the first step in a longer sequence, not the whole answer.

Housing Operation Stand Down Rhode Island Owns and Runs

The organization has developed, owns and operates permanent supportive, transitional and recovery housing on campuses across the state. Those units are spread over five campuses, with permanent housing in Johnston and West Warwick. Owning the buildings means the organization sets the standards inside them.

Cities Served

Johnston holds the headquarters campus at 1010 Hartford Avenue. Woonsocket holds the USMC Corporal Andrea T. Ryder Home at 492 South Main Street, opened in November 2023 for women veterans. BHDDH's 2020 statewide recovery housing list recorded men's Level 2 recovery houses under this operator in both Johnston and Woonsocket, so the two cities have anchored the recovery housing side for years.

Services Beyond Housing

Legal assistance, VA disability claims representation, intensive case management, employment and training, and basic human needs assistance all run alongside the housing. Veterans who are literally homeless can receive help with security deposits, rent, moving expenses and emergency shelter, while those at risk of homelessness can get help with arrears and utilities.

Who Qualifies

Active duty military personnel, National Guard members, reservists, veterans and military families are all eligible, and housing is available for women, men and families. Operation Stand Down Rhode Island works with state and federal agencies, community organizations and employers to move veterans on to whatever comes next.
