About this Sober House

Operation Stand Down Rhode Island - Hartford Avenue serves Johnston, Rhode Island, as a veterans recovery home in Providence County.

The Johnston Campus

1010 Hartford Avenue is Operation Stand Down Rhode Island's Johnston campus and the organization's headquarters. Housing and services occupy the same site: an arriving veteran can move into supportive housing, meet a case manager, start a VA disability claim and get employment training without leaving the property.

Recovery Housing for Veterans

BHDDH's 2020 statewide recovery housing list recorded a Level 2 men's recovery house in Johnston under Operation Stand Down Rhode Island. The organization continues to describe its Johnston site as permanent housing, and it develops, owns and operates its own properties instead of leasing space from a landlord.

Who Can Live Here

Eligibility runs through military service. Operation Stand Down Rhode Island serves active duty military personnel, National Guard members, reservists, veterans and military families. Placement follows a housing first model, so a veteran is housed before every other problem is solved.

Johnston in Providence County

Johnston borders Providence to the west and sits in Providence County. A veteran housed on Hartford Avenue is a short trip from the Providence VA Medical Center and from the meeting network in the capital, while living in a quieter suburban setting than a downtown address would offer.

Temporary Rental & Financial Assistance: Beyond OSDRI's housing, hundreds of additional veteran households are assisted each year in maintaining and securing housing in the community at large.  Eligible veterans who are literally homeless receive assistance with security deposits, rent, moving expenses and emergency shelter.  Those at risk of homelessness, may receive help with rent in arears and utilities. Who We Serve OSDRI is proud to serve Active Duty Military Personnel, National Guard, Reservists, Veterans and Military Families. OSDRI Services Employment & Training Eliminate barriers by providing veterans and their families the employment and training services they need in order to re-enter the workforce. Housing Facilitate a combination of permanent supportive, transitional and recovery housing offers to low-income and disabled veterans to meet their needs. Basic Human Needs Manage a community supported food pantry and Personal Hygiene program for use by in-need veterans stocked with non-perishables. Legal Services Our Legal Assistance for Warriors (LAW) program provides pro-bono representation to eligible Rhode Island veterans.
