About this Recovery House

Mercer County Fellowship Home is a men's recovery residence on Scott Street in Bluefield, West Virginia, in Mercer County. Fourteen men live here at $250 a month under Level 2 certification from the West Virginia Alliance of Recovery Residences.

A Fourteen-Bed Men's Sober House in Bluefield

Fourteen beds makes this a substantial house in a city that carries much of southern West Virginia's certified recovery capacity. The fellowship home model it runs is among the oldest forms of recovery housing in the country, built on residents holding each other accountable inside a structured household while clinical care comes from providers elsewhere. Scott Street runs through Bluefield's residential grid near the downtown core.

Two Hundred and Fifty Dollars a Month, Payable With EBT

The charge is $250 a month. A resident can pay the full amount in cash or check, or pay $150 plus $200 in EBT. Publishing the EBT route explicitly is unusual and it matters: a man arriving from treatment with SNAP benefits and almost no cash can see in advance exactly how he covers the month. That figure is among the lowest published monthly rates for certified recovery housing anywhere in West Virginia.

What Level 2 Certification Establishes

Level 2 describes monitored recovery housing with structured expectations, where clinical services come from outside providers. Certification commits the residence to a published code of ethics, written disclosure of fees and rules before move-in, a written relapse and discharge policy, and complaints reviewed outside the household. West Virginia has tied state referrals and public funding to certification since 2024.

Bluefield, Princeton and Mercer County Recovery Homes

Bluefield is the largest city in Mercer County, built by the Norfolk and Western railroad against the Virginia state line, with its twin of the same name across the border. Princeton, ten miles north, is the county seat and holds the courthouse and Princeton Community Hospital. Several certified recovery residences from different operators run in Bluefield, which makes it one of the few places in the southern coalfields where a man leaving treatment has more than one option.

Recovery Housing in the Southern Coalfields

The counties surrounding Mercer carry the highest overdose rates in the United States and among the fewest certified beds. McDowell, Wyoming, Summers and Monroe have almost no certified recovery housing of their own, so a fourteen-bed house in Bluefield serves a region far larger than the city itself.
