About this Recovery House

OneHeart is a coed recovery residence in Rapid City, South Dakota, on Kansas City Street in Pennington County, providing transitional housing inside a recovery-oriented sober living community. The campus opened to its first residents in 2021 and now spans most of the 100 to 300 blocks of the street it sits on.

How This Recovery Housing Campus Is Laid Out

Residential space is split across towers converted from former university dormitories, with one three-story tower for men, another for women and a four-story tower of studio apartments for families. The Main Provider Building holds offices, classrooms and consultation space. Grounds work included a sweat lodge and classroom so Native residents can reach cultural programming that is otherwise hard to access in a recovery setting.

Services Co-Located With This Sober Living Community

Rather than sending residents across the city, OneHeart brings the agencies onto the campus. More than 40 partner nonprofits work with the program and around 11 occupy space on site, including Western Dakota Tech, Rapid City Area Schools, the Career Learning Center, Catholic Social Services, Youth and Family Services, Behavior Management Systems and the YMCA. Addiction and mental health counseling, life skills and job training all happen where people live.

Who This Recovery Home Accepts

Entry runs entirely through referral. Applicants must be at least 18, have 90 days of sobriety before applying, and come through one of the partner agencies. OneHeart states plainly that it is not a shelter. Anyone interested should ask whichever agency they already work with whether it is a referral source.

What Residents Commit To in This Sober House

Each resident builds a self-directed income plan and housing plan and agrees to live clean and sober. The goal for every guest is permanent housing and steady employment by the time they leave. Housing is provided at no cost.

Pennington County Recovery Housing and Downtown Rapid City

Rapid City is the seat of Pennington County and the only city of consequence west of the Missouri River. A downtown campus puts residents within reach of the courthouse, county offices, transit and employers without needing a car, which is decisive in a region where the next town of any size can be an hour away.

Certification for Recovery Residences in South Dakota

South Dakota has no NARR affiliate and no licensure for sober living, so no residence in the state is certified. OneHeart appears on the state Division of Behavioral Health's published list of participating recovery housing providers.
