Foundations is a sober living home for women in Providence, Rhode Island, inside Providence County. Open Doors RI opened Foundations in 2022 as its first transitional house dedicated to women leaving prison.

A House Built for Women Leaving Prison

Foundations was the first transitional house in the Open Doors RI network created specifically for women coming out of prison. Admission priority goes to women arriving from prison or carrying criminal records, women completing residential treatment, women referred by the Department of Children, Youth and Families, and women working toward reunification with their children. Foundations forms part of the Open Doors RI She Thrives program.

Staffing and On-Site Support

Paid staff are present at Foundations for most of each day, including a program director, a case manager and house monitors. The house provides subsidized transitional housing, peer recovery coaching, case management and therapy on site. Foundations is led and staffed by people who have themselves come through incarceration and addiction.

What Foundations Asks of Residents

Foundations runs as a six-month transitional program, and residents are expected to work toward permanent housing throughout. Every woman in the house works, studies or actively pursues her recovery and wellness, and all residents are expected to be saving toward a move into permanent housing. Certification at Level 3

RICARES certifies Foundations at NARR Level 3, a supervised level that matches the paid staffing the house carries. Foundations appeared on the July 2024 RICARES roster and remains on the current one. RICARES is both Rhode Island's NARR affiliate and the state's designated certifier of recovery residences.
