About this Recovery House
Madeline's Swaddle House is a women's sober living home in Kansas City, Missouri, in Jackson County, built specifically for pregnant women and new mothers in recovery. Healing House KC opened it in 2017, and it holds eight women at a time, making it one of the smaller and more specialized residences in the organization's network.
A Sober House Built Around Pregnancy and New Motherhood
Most sober living homes are built around a general population of adults in recovery. Madeline's Swaddle House exists because pregnancy and early motherhood change what a woman needs from housing: prenatal care schedules, infant safety in shared common space, and a household of peers navigating the same stage of recovery. Eight women is a small enough household that staff can track individual medical appointments and postpartum needs without the residence turning into a general dormitory.
What Missouri's Voluntary Certification Covers
Missouri has no law requiring a recovery residence to certify, and the state's Department of Mental Health licenses clinical treatment programs; standalone sober housing falls outside it. Certification through the Missouri Coalition of Recovery Support Providers, the state's NARR affiliate, is a choice an operator makes. Healing House KC has made it, holding NARR accreditation alongside its own state Department of Mental Health certification, on top of the specialized pregnancy and postpartum programming Madeline's Swaddle House was purpose-built to deliver.
Recovery Housing for Mothers in Jackson County
Kansas City sits at the center of Jackson County and carries the hospitals, OB-GYN practices and pediatric care that a pregnant woman or new mother in recovery needs close by. A residence built for this population depends on being near that kind of medical infrastructure in a way a general sober house does not, and Kansas City's size is what makes a program like this viable at all.
One of Healing House KC's Fifteen Kansas City Homes
Madeline's Swaddle House sits inside a network of fifteen Healing House KC residences, six of them for women, including a newer home added in 2024 that specifically houses mothers with a child in tow. A woman who becomes pregnant while living in one of the organization's other homes has somewhere purpose-built to move to, run by staff who already know her file.
Applying for Pregnancy-Focused Sober Living
Healing House KC manages placement across its network, and a pregnant woman or new mother applies through the organization, not to the house directly. The standard questions still apply: what the fee structure covers, how prenatal and pediatric appointments are supported, what the discharge policy looks like, and whether medication for opioid use disorder is accommodated during pregnancy, a question with real clinical weight. Missouri's certification standard for recovery residences requires those answers to exist in writing.
