Who the South Portland House Serves
The house is for women in recovery from substance use disorder. One that treats the exit as part of the work — a job that will sustain a place of her own, a doctor who knows the resident, a benefits application that has actually been filed — changes what happens after the stay ends. House Expectations
The residence is peer-run and low-barrier, and there is a house manager among the four managers working across the organization's houses. Residents abstain from alcohol and other illicit drugs, and are expected to obtain and maintain employment, be enrolled in school, or volunteer in the community.
There is no set discharge date. Residents may stay as long as they wish, which means a woman who needs a year can take a year, and a woman who is ready in four months is not held back. In practice that flexibility is what lets the employment and healthcare work described above actually land.

South Portland sits on the southern shore of Portland Harbor, across the Fore River from Portland, and it is one of the larger cities in Cumberland County. For a woman in recovery, the practical appeal of the location is access: this is the part of Maine with the densest concentration of employers, clinics, treatment providers, recovery meetings and public transport, and a resident here can reach most of it without owning a car.
Cumberland County is also the most densely populated corner of Maine, and recovery housing there is in steady demand. A women's house in South Portland run by an established non-profit is not a common thing to find open.

Journey House Recovery states that all of its houses are certified by MARR, the Maine Association of Recovery Residences, and adhere to the evidence-based standards set out by NARR, the National Alliance of Recovery Residences; the organization is a NARR member and a registered MARR affiliate. The organization's other three houses are in Sanford, in York County — one for men and one for women — and in Lewiston, in Androscoggin County.
