About this Sober House
Wellspring Men's Residential Program in Bangor, Maine, appears in the state recovery residence directory for Penobscot County, and is today licensed by Maine's Department of Health and Human Services as low-intensity residential treatment for men. It is run by Wellspring, Inc., a Bangor organization with several programs in the area.
What the Program Provides
The Men's Residential Program provides four to six months of trauma-informed treatment, care and support for men. That length of stay is the defining feature. Four to six months is long enough for the work to be more than stabilisation, and the state license for the address allows stays of up to 180 days, so the program's stated duration and its licensed maximum line up.
Trauma-informed is a specific claim rather than a general one. It means the program is designed on the assumption that a substantial share of the men arriving have histories that shape how they respond to rules, confrontation and authority, and that the environment is built accordingly.
Treatment, Not Ordinary Sober Housing
It is worth being precise about what this listing is, because the categories get blurred. Maine's residential treatment overview records this address as low-intensity residential treatment, licensed and open to MaineCare. That is a different arrangement from a standard sober house, where residents live independently and get any clinical care they need from a separate provider.
The history matters too. Maine's July 2020 state recovery residence directory listed Wellspring Men's Residence at this address as a MARR-certified men's residence, so the address has genuine roots in the recovery housing world as well as the treatment world. Anyone approaching it should ask directly which of the two they would be entering under today's arrangements.
Part of a Larger Bangor Organization
Wellspring, Inc. runs considerably more than this one program. The organization operates the New Horizons detox center, outpatient counseling, a women's residential program, and Infinity House for women with children, and Maine DHHS lists further Wellspring addresses on State Street and Essex Street in Bangor, plus a detox on Main Road in Hampden.
For a man entering the men's residence, that scale has a practical meaning: detox, residential treatment and outpatient counseling are all inside one organization, so a step down from residential to outpatient does not require finding a new provider and starting the intake process over. The Cumberland Street address also serves as Wellspring's corporate mailing address, which is why it appears in more than one context in state records.
Men's Recovery in Bangor and Penobscot County
Bangor is the service hub for the whole of northern and eastern Maine. People come to it for medical care, courts and services from a catchment that reaches far up into Aroostook County and out along the Down East coast, and the same is true of treatment and recovery housing. For a man from a small town in Penobscot, Piscataquis or Washington County, Bangor is often the nearest place where a residential program, a detox and outpatient counseling all exist.
That also means demand on Bangor's capacity comes from far beyond the city itself, and it is worth asking about current availability early rather than assuming a place will be there when it is needed. Bangor's own recovery community is well established, with meetings and services concentrated within the city, which is an advantage for anyone stepping down from a residential program into independent living in the area. Men finishing four to six months here are doing so in a city where the next stage of support already exists, rather than returning immediately to a town with no meeting and no clinic within reach of home.
About Wellspring Inc Men's Program
Treatment fees and room and board fees are calculated separately. Payment for treatment fees can come from a variety of programs and sources, so it is best to discuss them by contacting the facility. Room and board fees are applied based upon ability to pay. The maximum fee would be $10 per day. Residents are expected to make good faith efforts in paying all room and board fees.We use a combination of therapy, education, and living skills development to assist in the recovery process.
Recovery is much more than maintaining sobriety. Recovery involves setting goals that will foster independence, family supports, self-confidence, and a new life style that will lead to success in many areas of life while maintaining a sober lifestyle.
We've adopted a model that helps residents to understand, recognize, and respond to the effects of trauma and addiction. We believe recovery from extreme stress and adversity requires an environment that promotes healing. Learn more about the Sanctuary Model® of Trauma.
