About this Recovery House

Phoenix House is a men's sober living home in Mountain Home, Idaho, the seat of Elmore County, at an address on North 6th East Street. It is run by Phoenix House of Idaho, a Boise organization that has provided recovery housing since 2015.

A Men's Sober House in Mountain Home

North 6th East Street is inside the old residential grid on the east side of town, the part of Mountain Home built on a walkable street plan before the city spread toward the highway. For a resident that layout matters more than it would in a larger city, because Mountain Home has no meaningful public transit. Being able to walk to a grocery store, a job and a meeting is not a convenience here; it is the whole feasibility of living without a car.

The Operator Behind This Elmore County Recovery Home

Phoenix House of Idaho was started in 2015 by Ryan and April York, a physical therapist and a middle-school teacher, with one sober living house. Chris Mecham joined the organization in 2016. It runs recovery housing in Boise as well as here, which gives a resident in Mountain Home something a purely local house cannot: an operator with a second city, a wider referral network and the option of a transfer. Anyone applying should confirm which houses the organization currently has beds in.

Idaho Sober Living Certification and What It Would Add

Idaho has no certifying body for recovery residences, no registry, and no state affiliate of the National Alliance for Recovery Residences. Where an affiliate exists, certification obliges a house to publish its fees and rules in advance, keep a written relapse and discharge policy, and submit to complaint review by someone outside the household. None of that is required in Idaho. A resident can still ask for all three in writing, and an operator that provides them has voluntarily met the standard the state declines to set.

Recovery Housing in Mountain Home and Elmore County

Mountain Home is the seat of Elmore County, sitting on the Interstate 84 corridor between Boise and Twin Falls, with Mountain Home Air Force Base just outside town. The base and the highway shape the local job market, and the county courthouse and the area's outpatient providers are in the city. Elmore County has very little recovery housing of any kind, so a structured men's house in the county seat is often the only option that keeps a resident near his work, his family and his probation officer at the same time.

Sober Living Outside a Metro Area

A small-city sober house works differently from a Boise one. There are fewer beds, so timing an application to a discharge date matters more. There are fewer meetings, so the ones that exist carry more of the load. There are fewer employers, so a resident who burns a bridge has less room to recover from it. The compensation is that a man stays where his life already is. Idaho's Department of Health and Welfare maintains statewide behavioral health resources for anyone weighing a move.
