Teen Challenge of the Dakotas
About Teen Challenge of the Dakotas
Teen Challenge of the Dakotas is a recovery housing provider in Brookings, South Dakota, operating long-term residential recovery homes for adult men in Brookings County. It is one of more than 200 Adult and Teen Challenge USA residential programs nationally, and it appears on the South Dakota Division of Behavioral Health's list of participating recovery housing providers.
The Recovery Homes This Operator Runs
Teen Challenge of the Dakotas operates two residential sites, both in Brookings:
- Teen Challenge of the Dakotas, 600 West 16th Avenue South, Brookings. The main campus on the western edge of town, where induction and training phases are housed.
- Teen Challenge of the Dakotas Re-Entry, 317 3rd Avenue, Brookings. The downtown facility, renovated in 2015, where the six-month re-entry phase runs alongside the organization's thrift store.
A Sober Living Operator Built Around a Long Stay
The program runs 14 to 16 months across five phases. Eight to ten months cover induction and training; the final six months are re-entry. Very few providers in South Dakota ask for or offer a commitment that long, and it changes what the program can attempt. Work training and community service have been a consistent emphasis rather than an add-on.
Two Recovery Residences That Do Different Jobs
Splitting the campus from the re-entry house is a deliberate structure. A man finishing the program downtown is walking the same sidewalks, using the same bus stops and applying to the same employers he will rely on afterward. Rehearsing independence in the place you will live is a different exercise from rehearsing it on a campus at the edge of town.
Brookings County Recovery Housing and the Local Economy
Brookings is the seat of Brookings County and home to South Dakota State University, which gives a town of its size an unusual amount of steady service and light industrial hiring. That matters for men in a work-training program who need a job before the final phase ends.
Fees at This South Dakota Sober Living Provider
The program is 1,000 dollars per month with a non-refundable 50 dollar application fee. Detox is not offered, and men needing it are connected to local programs first.
Certification for Recovery Homes in South Dakota
South Dakota has no NARR affiliate and no licensure requirement for recovery residences, so nothing in the state is certified. Adult and Teen Challenge centers do undergo the network's own evaluation and review cycle every three years, which is a separate matter from state certification.
