Teen Challenge of the Dakotas Re-Entry is a men's recovery residence in downtown Brookings, South Dakota, in Brookings County, occupying facilities on 3rd Avenue that were fully renovated in 2015. This is where the final phase of a 14 to 16 month program takes place.

What the Final Phase of This Recovery Home Involves

Re-entry runs six months. By the time a man arrives, he has already completed eight to ten months of induction and training at the organization's main campus. The last stretch focuses on discipleship and the practical work of moving back into ordinary life with a job, a routine and obligations that nobody is managing for him.

Why a Downtown Sober House Changes the Exercise

Finishing a program downtown puts a man on the streets he will actually use. He walks to work, walks to a meeting, handles his own schedule and lives among people who are not in the program. Practicing independence in the environment where you will live is a sharper test than practicing it at the edge of town, and it surfaces problems while there is still support to address them.

Work and the Thrift Store Attached to This Recovery Residence

The same downtown facility houses the organization's Home Again Thrift Store, open to the community on Saturdays with proceeds supporting the program. Work training has long been central to how this organization operates rather than an optional extra.

Brookings is the seat of Brookings County and home to South Dakota State University. A town of roughly 25,000 with a university in it supports steady service, retail and light industrial hiring, which gives men in the re-entry phase somewhere realistic to land before the program ends.

Certification for Recovery Homes in South Dakota

South Dakota has no NARR affiliate and no licensure for sober living, so no residence in the state carries certification. Adult and Teen Challenge centers undergo the network's own evaluation every three years, which is a network process and not a state one.
