About Passages Women's Transitional Living

Passages Women's Transitional Living is a sober living operator in Rapid City, South Dakota, providing faith-based recovery housing for women in Pennington County. The nonprofit took shape in 2008, housed its first residents in 2013 and now appears on the South Dakota Division of Behavioral Health's list of participating recovery housing providers.

What This Recovery Housing Provider Does

The organization serves women transitioning out of incarceration or homelessness where drug and alcohol use is part of the history. Every resident is assigned a trained volunteer transition coach who works with one woman at a time for the full year she is in the program, meeting weekly. That one-to-one ratio over that length of time is unusual for a nonprofit of this size.

The Structure Behind This Sober Living Operator

The Transformation Program is designed to run 18 months. Residents pay a program fee, follow house rules, keep a nightly curfew, share household maintenance, complete random drug testing, join in-house Bible studies, attend weekly life skills classes and weekly recovery meetings, and attend a Christian service of their choosing. Goals are set across life skills, employment, physical health, relationships and spiritual growth, and residents receive a certificate on completion.

South Dakota Sober Homes and the Referral Pathway

Applications start with a pre-application mailed in, followed by a telephone interview arranged through a case manager, pre-release worker, probation officer or attorney. Acceptance depends on the application, the interview and available space. Building that pathway around corrections and case management staff means release plans can be built months ahead.

A Women's Recovery Housing Provider West of the Missouri

West River South Dakota has very little women's recovery housing. Rapid City is the seat of Pennington County and the only city of real size in the western half of the state, so an organization based here is the practical option for women released from custody or leaving treatment anywhere in the Black Hills region.

Certification for Recovery Homes in South Dakota

South Dakota has no NARR affiliate and no licensure requirement for sober living, so no residence in the state is certified. Passages is a participating provider on the Division of Behavioral Health's published list.
