New Hope Manor

About New Hope Manor

New Hope Manor is a women's sober living operator in New York, running certified recovery housing in Barryville and Poughkeepsie. Founded in 1970 by the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement, it was the first all-female residential substance use treatment center in the state and has operated continuously for more than fifty years.

A Women's Recovery Housing Provider With a Long Record

The organization traces to Father Dan Egan, who began working with addicted women in 1952 and opened the Village Haven halfway house in 1962. New Hope Manor opened in Garrison in 1970 with two women from that house. Educational and vocational programming arrived in 1971, the program moved to Barryville in 1982, it became an independent nonprofit licensed by New York State in 1985, and it was upgraded to a state-certified Part 820 program in 2017. An operator with that much history has outlasted several eras of addiction policy, which is a fair proxy for whether it will be there next year.

Two New York Recovery Homes, Two Stages

The organization runs a two-step continuum:

  • The main campus at 35 Hillside Road in Barryville, in Sullivan County, certified for fifty-three beds, providing stabilization and rehabilitation.
  • The reintegration house at 141 South Avenue in Poughkeepsie, in Dutchess County, certified for ten beds.

A woman typically begins in Barryville and moves to Poughkeepsie when she is ready to work, attend school and manage her own schedule with staff nearby. The Poughkeepsie house has been part of the organization since its first year.

Mothers and Children in These Sober Homes

The organization serves women ages thirteen and up, including pregnant women, and it houses mothers with young children. A formalized mother and infant program supports pregnant women and new mothers, and the Barryville campus added a wing with medical, childcare and therapeutic space in 2010 to make that practical. Very few residential providers in New York solve the childcare problem on site, and the ones that do reach a population that otherwise never gets to a bed at all.

Certification Behind These Sullivan and Dutchess County Recovery Residences

Both residences are certified by the New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports under the state's residential services regulations. New York does not require a recovery residence to hold any certification, so a certified operator has taken on inspection, an approved scope of services and an external complaint route by choice. What each of the state's certification tracks actually covers is set out in this guide to certifying a sober house with OASAS.

Reaching This Hudson Valley Sober Living Operator

Admissions run through the organization, and the questions worth asking are organizational ones: how the move from Barryville to Poughkeepsie is decided and documented, what ages of children can be accommodated at each site, how adolescent residents continue their schooling, how funding and insurance are handled, and how a family raises a concern past a program director. An operator with a fifty-year record should have all of it ready.
