About this Recovery House
New Hope Manor on Hillside Road is a women's recovery residence in Barryville, New York, in Sullivan County. Certified for 53 beds by the New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports, it was the first all-female residential substance use treatment center in New York State and has been housing women since 1970.
A Fifty-Three Bed Women's Recovery Home in Sullivan County
The Barryville campus is a single building of about thirty thousand square feet, rebuilt and expanded over four decades on the site of a former boarding house called the Glendella. A new wing completed in 2010 added medical, childcare and therapeutic space. Fifty-three beds makes this one of the largest women's residential programs in the Hudson Valley and the Catskills, and the scale is what allows the program to keep specialized services under one roof instead of referring women out for each of them.
Women, Pregnancy and Parenting in This Recovery Residence
The program serves women ages thirteen and up, including women who are pregnant and women with young children in treatment with them. A formalized mother and infant program grew out of that history. The reason this matters is blunt: the most common reason a mother declines residential treatment is that she has nowhere to put her children, and a residence that solves the childcare problem removes the single largest barrier between a woman and a treatment bed. The 2010 wing exists precisely because the organization decided to solve it on site.
A Half Century of New York Recovery Housing
The Franciscan Friars of the Atonement founded the program in 1970 in Garrison, growing out of Father Dan Egan's work with addicted women that began in 1952 and produced the Village Haven halfway house in 1962. It opened with two women. In 1971 vocational and educational programming was added, in 1982 the program moved to Barryville, in 1985 it became an independent nonprofit licensed by New York State, and in 2017 it was upgraded to a state-certified Part 820 facility with expanded medical and mental health services. Fifty-five years of continuous operation is an unusual thing in recovery housing, where most addresses turn over in under a decade.
Barryville, the Delaware River and a Rural Sober House
Barryville is a hamlet in the Town of Highland, on the Delaware River at the Pennsylvania line, in the southwestern corner of Sullivan County. Monticello, the county seat, is about half an hour northeast and holds the county courthouse, county offices and most of the region's services. The setting is genuinely rural: river, forest, and the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River corridor. For a woman coming out of a chaotic urban situation, distance is part of the treatment, and the campus is built to be self-sufficient because the nearest alternative is not close.
Applying to This Sullivan County Recovery Home
Admissions run through New Hope Manor directly. The questions that matter most here concern children and length of stay: what ages of children can come along, what childcare looks like during groups and appointments, how school is handled for adolescent residents, how medication for opioid use disorder is managed, and what the step down to the organization's reintegration housing involves. A state-certified program answers all of it in writing before an admission date is set.
