Fresh Start Sober Living Programs
About Fresh Start Sober Living Programs
Fresh Start Sober Living Programs is a sober living operator based in Columbia, Missouri, running accredited recovery housing across Boone and Callaway counties. The nonprofit was founded by James Bayless, a person in long-term recovery, and has housed people in mid-Missouri for about a decade. It now runs roughly twenty properties in Columbia serving about a hundred residents, plus two homes in Fulton.
A Mid-Missouri Recovery Housing Provider
The organization is a housing and peer support provider. Its residences supply an address, a schedule and a community, and clinical care comes from outpatient providers elsewhere in the region. Residents keep their own counselors, prescribers and meetings. What the operator manages is the part that decides whether treatment holds: somewhere stable to sleep, people who notice, and rules that do not change from one week to the next.
Serving Columbia and Fulton
The Columbia program is the core of the operation, with houses spread across the city's older residential neighborhoods and a walk-in peer respite center on Rangeline Street. The organization's office is on Grand Avenue. In 2023 it opened two renovated homes in Fulton, one for men and one for women, extending accredited recovery housing into Callaway County, where residents previously had to travel to Columbia for a bed.
Men's and Women's Sober Houses, Kept Separate
Every residence is single-gender. Men apply to the men's houses and women to the women's, and each household runs on one set of rules written for one population. With more than thirty residences across the two cities, the operator can usually place someone in the right household without a wait in another county, and can move a resident who is not fitting where he or she was first placed.
MCRSP Accreditation Across the Portfolio
The organization's houses appear on the accredited roster maintained by the Missouri Coalition of Recovery Support Providers, Missouri's affiliate of the National Alliance for Recovery Residences. Missouri does not license or inspect recovery residences, so accreditation is voluntary, and an operator that carries it on its houses has agreed to a published code of ethics, written disclosure of fees and rules before move-in, a written relapse and discharge policy, and complaint review from outside the residence. Missouri publishes no per-residence levels, so accreditation itself is the credential.
A Continuum From Respite to Permanent Sober Living
Few recovery housing providers in the state cover this much ground. Fresh Start runs peer respite for people in immediate crisis, transitional recovery housing for the year after treatment, and permanent supportive housing for residents whose stability depends on an address they can keep. Someone can enter the program from an emergency room and leave it with a lease, and every step in between is handled by the same staff.
Families, Veterans and Recovery Support Services
The program also houses single parents in recovery, expecting mothers, and families working toward reunification, and it operates the First Start Childcare Center. It runs transitional and permanent housing for veterans, a clubhouse with a social calendar, assistance obtaining birth certificates and state identification, and naloxone distribution. These are the logistics that decide whether housing survives contact with real life, and the operator handles them in-house.
Applying to a Fresh Start Recovery Home
Applications go to the organization directly, and one route covers every house. The questions worth asking at the operator level are different from the ones about a particular address: how long the wait usually runs, what the weekly fee covers and how a deposit is refunded, whether the program takes referrals from treatment providers, drug courts and the county jail, whether a bed can be held while someone finishes treatment, and how a complaint escalates past a house to the organization and then to MCRSP. A provider this size should have all of those answers ready.
