About Amos House

Amos House, in Providence, Rhode Island, operates recovery residences for men and women across Providence County. Amos House began in 1976 as a house of hospitality and soup kitchen on the south side of Providence, and has grown into a social service agency that reaches more than fifteen thousand people a year. In written testimony to the Rhode Island Senate in March 2026, Amos House stated that it operates seven recovery houses for unhoused men and women in early recovery.

Amos House as a Recovery Housing Provider

Every Amos House sober home sits inside a single city. The agency describes individual rooms and apartment units spread across sixteen properties in Providence, and rents each unit within affordable housing guidelines. Care coordinators stay with residents after a move-in, so the relationship with Amos House continues well past the referral. Amos House turned its housing toward recovery and permanent supportive models in the 2000s, and is now recognized within Rhode Island's recovery, re-entry and workforce development community.

RICARES Certification Across the Amos House Portfolio

RICARES, the Rhode Island affiliate of the National Alliance for Recovery Residences and the certifying agency named by the state, lists eight certified Amos House recovery residences. All eight are in Providence and all eight are recorded at NARR Level 2. Five serve men and three serve women. Two carry published house names on the roster, Fatherhood House and the Mother-Child Reunification Program. Certification is voluntary in Rhode Island, and Amos House has kept its residences current through repeated recertifications.

The Amos House Housing Ladder

Entry into Amos House sober living usually runs through the agency's recovery-based shelter program, which Amos House describes as the only recovery-based shelter in Rhode Island. That program lasts ninety days and pairs each guest with a case manager who builds an individual plan covering physical, mental and behavioral health. Amos House reports that eighty-five percent of participants complete it, gain sustainable income and leave homelessness for housing, and that its recidivism rate is ten percent. Graduates move into what the agency calls Phase Two, a more independent stage that keeps intensive case management, groups and the support of a sober community.

Reunification Housing for Parents in Recovery

Two Amos House programs house parents rebuilding a claim to custody. The Mother-Child Reunification Program gives mothers who have lost custody a structured setting supported by round-the-clock staffing and continuous scheduled activity. The Fatherhood Program supports fathers establishing visitation, increasing visitation they already hold, or working toward joint or full custody, and helps them navigate a legal system Amos House says does not always favor fathers who need a second chance. Between them the two programs reach roughly twenty-five parents and forty children a year.
