About this Recovery House

Our Safe Place - Milwaukee is a sober living home at 740 N 29th Street in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in Milwaukee County. The 501(c)(3) nonprofit has run bridge housing at this address since 2005, when founders Larry and Bonnie Liss purchased the building from A Safe Haven.

A Fifty-Bed Sober House on North 29th Street

The house holds up to fifty residents, which makes it considerably larger than the typical single sober home and gives it room to serve people other Milwaukee houses have to turn away. Structure here is deliberately firm: mandatory abstinence, live-in staff supervision, random drug testing and a mandatory weekly meeting apply to everyone living in the building.

What Life Inside the House Looks Like

Residents have access to on-site laundry, a workout area and a backyard patio, and the house enforces a curfew along with restrictions on visitors. The goal is a stable, supervised environment, not an unstructured group home, and residents are expected to move toward paying their own rent as they get back on their feet financially.

Publicly Funded Recovery Housing

Our Safe Place draws support from the Behavioral Health Division's Community Access to Recovery Services program, which subsidizes housing costs for residents who need it. Because demand regularly exceeds the house's fifty beds, the organization keeps a waitlist and residents can call directly to check where they stand.

This stretch of Milwaukee sits close to the city's outpatient treatment network, public transit and social services, so residents can reach appointments without needing a car. As the seat of Milwaukee County and the state's largest city, Milwaukee concentrates more recovery infrastructure than almost anywhere else in Wisconsin, and this house puts residents inside that network from day one.
