About Our Safe Place Inc

Our Safe Place Inc is a sober living operator based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, providing bridge housing for people in recovery from substance use. The 501(c)(3) nonprofit was established in 2005 by Larry and Bonnie Liss, who purchased a building previously used by A Safe Haven, and it is now run day to day by their son Andy.

A Milwaukee Nonprofit Recovery Housing Provider

Our Safe Place describes its purpose as offering a loving home and facility for people in need, and the organization has built its model around structure: mandatory abstinence, live-in staff supervision, random drug testing and a weekly house meeting are standard across its program. Residents move toward paying their own rent over time, not staying on a single fixed fee indefinitely.

Bridge Housing on North 29th Street

The organization's flagship residence sits at 740 N 29th Street in Milwaukee and holds up to fifty residents, making it one of the larger single-site recovery homes in the city. Onsite amenities include laundry, a workout space and a backyard patio, alongside the weekly recovery meetings every resident is expected to attend.

Public Funding and a Waitlist

Our Safe Place receives support through the Behavioral Health Division's Community Access to Recovery Services program, which helps cover the cost of housing for residents who could not otherwise afford it. Demand regularly exceeds capacity, and the organization keeps a waitlist that prospective residents can check by calling directly.

Recovery Housing for Milwaukee County

Milwaukee is the state's largest city and the seat of Milwaukee County, and Our Safe Place's location puts residents inside the city's concentration of outpatient providers, public transit and social services. For someone coming out of treatment or incarceration without a stable address, that proximity is often the difference between staying connected to care and losing it.
