About this Recovery Home
Evolution House is a men's recovery residence in Williamsburg, Virginia, an independent city in the Historic Triangle that belongs to no county. It combines residential living with outpatient clinical care, and it is owned and operated by people who are themselves in long-term recovery.
A Men's Recovery Home With Clinical Care Attached
Most sober living homes supply structure and send residents elsewhere for treatment. Evolution House does both from one organization. It delivers evidence-based outpatient services, including group and individual counseling, motivational interviewing and medication management, and it provides low-intensity residential services under Virginia's Addiction and Recovery Treatment Services benefit. For a man leaving detox or inpatient care, that removes the gap where housing and treatment usually come apart. His counselor and his bed answer to the same organization.
Medication Management Inside a Williamsburg Sober House
Medication management is part of what this residence offers, which settles a question that decides housing for a lot of people. Someone stabilized on buprenorphine or another prescribed medication who loses a bed over it can lose the medication along with it. A residence that handles the prescribing and the housing together keeps treatment and address aligned, and it means a resident does not have to explain his prescription to a house manager who has no clinical training.
Run by People in Long-Term Recovery
The organization states plainly that it is owned and operated by individuals in long-term recovery, and that staff are in recovery themselves. Its stated principle is that programs do not change people and relationships do. That is a claim about how the household actually runs. Rules and schedules matter less in a house like this than whether the person enforcing them has been in the same chair, and residents tend to know the difference inside a week.
Recovery Housing in Williamsburg and the Historic Triangle
Williamsburg is an independent city, so it sits inside no county, and it shares its circuit and general district courts with James City County next door. The city holds William and Mary, Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center and Colonial Behavioral Health, the community services board covering Williamsburg, James City County, York County and Poquoson. The Williamsburg Area Transit Authority runs local routes, and the corridor down Interstate 64 reaches Newport News and Hampton in half an hour. Evolution House states that it serves residents from across Virginia, including Newport News, Hampton and the surrounding counties, and that regional draw is normal for a house in a small city with this much clinical capacity nearby.
What to Ask This Recovery Residence Before Moving In
Admissions run through the organization. The questions to lead with are the ones a combined housing and treatment provider should answer without hesitation: what the residential stay costs and what the outpatient services cost, whether Medicaid or private insurance is billed for either, how long a typical stay runs, what the house expects of a resident during the day, how a discharge is handled, and who oversees the house when clinical staff are not on site.
Evolution House provides safe housing and supportive, structured sober living conditions for people exiting rehabilitation programs or in some cases, jails, or other institutions. We understand the importance of having strong role models and mentors. Evolution House serves as a transitional environment between such programs and mainstream society.  It has truly become a cornerstone in the recovery community.
As you can imagine, substance abuse takes people from all walks of society to extreme levels of degradation and demoralization. As the manifestation of a mental illness, it has caused much havoc in their lives. A lot of care and healing is required to help them begin a “normal†life, which encompasses a complete mental and spiritual overhaul. We have a model that has been proven to be very successful, helping a wide range of people from a physician trying to save his life and his license, to people who are literally homeless. Our program consists of requirements to attend 12-step meetings, have a job, work with a sponsor, attend group therapy, and learn day to day life skills such as chores around the house. We are different from other houses in that we provide a house manager who lives in the house 24/7 and conducts random drug testing. We work very hard to foster a loving environment with a sense of community and brotherhood. Our house meetings are focused on individual recovery goals and continued personal growth as well as conflict resolution within the house.
