About this Recovery Home

Discovery House is a coed sober house at 2069 W. Moore Street Unit 1 in Richmond, Virginia, an independent city that belongs to no county and sits in DBHDS Region 4. Virginia Family Services operates it as a certified recovery residence at Level of Support 2.

An LGBTQIA+ Affirming Coed Sober House

The state register names LGBTQIA+ residents among the populations this house serves. That entry is a commitment, and in recovery housing it settles a question people otherwise have to ask a stranger over the phone. A transgender or nonbinary resident deciding between a men's house and a women's house has a third option in a coed household that has said in advance it will house them. The register also names women, men, veterans, pregnant women and residents with co-occurring disorders.

What Certification Establishes for This Recovery Residence

Certification is mandatory for recovery residences in Virginia and is granted address by address. This one is accredited through the Virginia Association of Recovery Residences, one of two credentialing bodies the state recognizes. The house has agreed to a code of ethics, to giving applicants its fees and rules in writing before move-in, to a written relapse and discharge policy, and to a complaint process that reaches outside the household. Certification says nothing about whether a particular house fits a particular person. It does create a record, and a record is checkable.

Level 2 Recovery Housing in a Two-Unit Building

Unit 1 is a household of its own, with a second certified residence in the other unit at the same street number and a separate register row to prove it. Level of Support 2 is the Monitored tier: peer-based living, written house rules, a manager responsible for the address, and clinical care from outside. Residents keep their own appointments and their own medications, and the house holds them to a schedule.

A Sober Living Operator With Its Own Clinical Arm

Virginia Family Services has delivered addiction and mental health treatment in Richmond since 2012 under CARF accreditation, and it is a member of the National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers. Housing and Addiction Recovery Treatment Services come from the same organization, and Medicaid and the major commercial plans cover the clinical side. A resident who needs to start outpatient care in the first week does not have to find a provider first.

Richmond Recovery Homes Within a Few Blocks

Nine more of the operator's residences sit on West Moore Street and one on West Leigh Street, all inside the 23220 ZIP code on Richmond's near west side. West Broad Street and the GRTC Pulse line are a short walk away, which puts downtown, the state office district and the VCU Health campuses within reach without a car. For someone arriving from a smaller Virginia town, that concentration of work, transit and outpatient care is the reason to look at Richmond first.
