About this Recovery Home
Sumpter is a women's sober house on Sumpter Street in Richmond, Virginia, an address in the 23220 ZIP code west of downtown in the independent city. The WAR Foundation operates it, and Virginia's register of certified recovery residences carries it at Level of Support 2 with accreditation through the Virginia Association of Recovery Residences.
A Women's Sober House West of Downtown Richmond
Certified women's beds are the scarcer half of this market, and location decides how usable one is. Sumpter Street sits in the dense older grid west of the city center, where Virginia Commonwealth University, its health system and the clinics and offices around them dominate the employment and the appointment calendar for miles. Bus service is frequent in this part of the city, and a resident can reach an outpatient visit, a shift and a meeting on foot or on one ride. For a woman leaving treatment without a car, that is the difference between keeping a schedule and losing it.
What the Monitored Level Requires of Recovery Housing
Level 2 on the Virginia register describes a monitored residence. House rules exist in writing, there is oversight on site, peer accountability carries the daily work, and clinical care stays with outside providers the resident keeps. The WAR Foundation builds its residences on the social model of recovery, which puts the household itself at the center: shared responsibilities, shared meetings and a culture the residents maintain between them. Someone who needs clinical supervision under the same roof is looking at a different kind of facility.
What VARR Accreditation Adds to a Women's Sober Living Home
Accreditation applies the standards of the National Alliance for Recovery Residences, and the result is published by the state. A listed house has committed to a code of ethics, to handing an applicant fees and rules in writing before move-in, to a written relapse and discharge policy, and to a complaint process that reaches past the operator. Virginia makes this mandatory: operating an uncertified recovery residence is a Class 1 misdemeanor under Va. Code 37.2-431.1. The register entry is what lets a family in another state check a claim instead of taking it.
Recovery Housing Inside a City That Belongs to No County
Richmond is an independent city, so it lies within no county while serving as the seat of Henrico County next door. That produces an unusually compact civic footprint. The circuit and general district courts, the Richmond Behavioral Health Authority, the state's behavioral health offices, VCU Health and the region's transit hub all sit inside the city line. A resident here handles a court obligation, a treatment appointment and a job application without leaving one jurisdiction.
The WAR Foundation Network of Recovery Homes
This is one of seven WAR Foundation residences across Richmond and Henrico County, two of them for women, spread across the monitored and supervised levels. The organization runs more than housing: a recovery day center, court advocacy, transportation assistance, intensive programming and recovery capital assessment through the REC-CAP framework all sit under the same name. Applications and placement questions go to the operator.
