About this Recovery Home

The Kolby House is a men's sober house on North Royal Avenue in Front Royal, Virginia, the seat of Warren County in the northern Shenandoah Valley. The Warren Coalition operates it as a Level Two recovery residence certified through the Virginia Association of Recovery Residences, and it stands on the site of the Coalition's original recovery house.

Nine Beds in a Level Two Sober House

The house holds up to nine men. Residents share bedrooms two to a room, with one single room available at a higher rate, and a house manager who is also a Peer Recovery Specialist lives on site. Rent runs $232 a week, and the operator states that the fee covers the manager's salary as well as the bed. The average stay is six to nine months. Those numbers describe a small, closely held household where the manager knows every resident and nine men are accountable to each other, not to a policy manual.

What It Takes to Qualify for This Recovery Housing

The Warren Coalition publishes the conditions a man has to meet to move in and to stay:

  • Continue with outpatient treatment, which may include Medication Assisted Recovery, Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous or counseling.
  • Arrive on a referral from a treatment facility.
  • Comply with regular drug screening.
  • Obtain employment and hold it.

Residents referred by drug court are handled case by case, and the Coalition works with those men individually to meet the requirements. The referral condition is the one that shapes the household most. Everyone in the house arrives from a treatment program, so nobody is starting cold, and the employment requirement means the men living here have somewhere to be during the day.

Medication Assisted Recovery in This Sober Living Home

Medication Assisted Recovery is named explicitly as an acceptable form of ongoing treatment. That is a more important statement than it looks. Acceptance is not universal in sober living, and a man on prescribed buprenorphine or methadone who loses housing over the prescription can lose the medication along with the address. A house that lists Medication Assisted Recovery among the treatment options it will accept keeps a resident's clinical care and his housing pointed the same direction.

Living at This Front Royal Recovery Home

The house sits within walking distance of downtown Front Royal, which matters in a town this size because the alternative is a car nobody has yet. Common areas include a kitchen and a gathering space with a television, and the house has a screened back porch, a grill, a fire pit and a yard with a garden the residents maintain. Workout equipment is available, security cameras are in place, in-house group meetings are held, and the Coalition provides transportation as available to work and medical appointments, help with job placement and resume building, counseling with a substance misuse counselor, and group excursions.

Front Royal Sober Living and Warren County

Front Royal is the county seat, which puts the circuit and general district courts, the county offices and the local social services inside the same town as the house. It sits at the northern entrance to Shenandoah National Park where the two forks of the Shenandoah River meet, on Interstate 66 about an hour and a quarter west of Washington. Winchester and its regional hospital are a short drive north. A man on probation or under a court order in Warren County can meet the obligation on foot from this address, which is not true of most recovery housing in rural Virginia.

The Warren Coalition's Recovery Homes

Three certified residences carry the Warren Coalition name, all of them in Front Royal: two men's houses and one for women. Applications go to the Coalition, which also runs peer recovery services, substance misuse assessment and treatment, jail and reentry services for the regional facility serving Rappahannock, Shenandoah and Warren counties, and prevention programming across the county. A man applying to either men's house is considered for the one with a bed.
