About this Recovery Home

Common Ground Recovery is a certified peer-run men's sober living home in Rutland, Vermont, the shire town of Rutland County. It is a three-bed pilot residence that opened on November 7, 2025, run by the nonprofit of the same name, and it is a trauma-informed, peer-led house where residents govern the household themselves.

A Three-Bed Peer-Run Sober House

Three beds is as small as recovery housing gets, and the scale is deliberate. There is no live-in manager and no staff rota. The residents run the house, which is what peer-run means, and it works because everyone in it has already held a routine somewhere more structured. For a man who has done his time in a monitored residence and now needs an address he can hold while he rebuilds credit and a rental history, a smaller and quieter household is the right shape. The address is not published, and placement runs through the operator.

Filling the Gap Below Monitored Recovery Housing

Vermont's recovery residences cluster at the higher-support end, and the peer-run level has been thin for years. Advocates have long described the missing piece as step-down housing: less intensive, longer-term, and available after someone finishes short-term inpatient treatment or leaves a more structured residence. Before this house opened, the director of the Rutland recovery center said she knew of no peer-run residence in the area. This one provides continuity and independence at once, and it frees higher-support beds for people who need them more.

What Certification Establishes for This Recovery Residence

The house holds certification from the Vermont Alliance for Recovery Residences, obtained by a nonprofit in its first year. Certification obliges a residence to a published code of ethics, written disclosure of fees and rules before move-in, a written relapse and discharge policy, an annual onsite inspection and grievances reviewed from outside the house. In a state that licenses no recovery residences, a brand new operator carrying certification has chosen to be accountable before anyone asked it to be.

Why a Rutland Address Matters After Higher-Level Care

The founder's own experience is the argument for this house. Leaving a Rutland recovery residence, he was refused by landlords over credit and past law enforcement contact, and the local affordable housing organizations had nothing. Rutland is the shire town of Rutland County and the service hub for southwestern Vermont, with Rutland Regional Medical Center, the courthouse, the Turning Point Center of Rutland and city transit all inside its limits. Staying in the city after a residence means a man keeps his job, his coach and his meetings while he rebuilds a rental record.
