Grace Collins opened The North Star Sober Living in April 2009 after a wave of closures left women in Kerrville without a sober home to turn to, and the house relocated to its current McFarland Drive address in March 2012. Laura Godwin joined as co-director in 2017, and the two have run the house together since. Fifteen years of continuous operation under the same founder is unusual in an industry where houses open and close within a year or two.
Fifteen Beds Across a Mix of Room Types
The house holds fifteen beds split across four private rooms, two semi-private rooms, two doubles and one triple, giving residents a range of privacy and cost options within a single address. That mix lets a woman start in a shared room and move to something more private as she stabilizes, without changing houses.
A 12-Step Centered Program
Residents are expected to maintain sobriety, work with a sponsor, attend at least four meetings a week, and hold down employment, education or steady volunteer work. Rent is due on time, weekly house meetings are mandatory, and household responsibilities are shared among residents instead of assigned to staff. The operators describe the culture as one of high accountability, built around showing residents how recovery has worked for the people running the house.

The North Star provides safe and comfortable housing for 15 women while offering a convenient location to shopping and downtown Kerrville. The North Star has been newly renovated and the family environment helps women to develop lifelong friendships.
