About this Recovery House

Grace House of Memphis is a women's recovery residence on North Montgomery Street in Memphis, Tennessee, in Shelby County, and one of the longest-running programs of its kind in the city.

A Women's Recovery Residence Since 1976

Founder Pat Stokes opened Grace House with a simple premise: a safe home where women could get sober alongside other women living with the same disease. Fifty years later the program still runs on that idea, and it has kept one commitment through every one of them: nobody is turned away for lack of money to pay.

A Structured Program on North Montgomery Street

Residents typically move through roughly six months of residential treatment, with extended care available afterward for anyone who needs more time before living independently. Staff work with residents on the practical pieces that determine whether sobriety holds after graduation: steady employment and stable housing lined up before move-out day, not after it.

Midtown Memphis and the Route to Everyday Life

North Montgomery Street sits in the Memphis Medical District, within reach of Methodist University Hospital, Baptist Memorial Hospital and the outpatient providers clustered around them. Midtown's grid of bus routes connects the neighborhood to downtown Memphis and to the rest of Shelby County, so residents can keep court dates, medical appointments and job interviews without depending on a car.

What Tennessee Requires of Recovery Housing

Tennessee requires recovery residences to be certified, and two bodies certify homes in the state: the Tennessee Alliance of Recovery Residences and Recovery is the New High. Certification obliges a written code of ethics, disclosed fees and rules before admission, a written relapse and discharge policy, and a complaint process outside the house.

Reaching Grace House of Memphis

Admission starts with a preadmission screening, and the program's decades of continuous operation in the same Memphis neighborhood give it a track record most sober living operators in Shelby County cannot match.
