About this Recovery Home

Claybourne House is a women's sober house in Portland, Oregon, in Multnomah County, one of the recovery residences operated by Sober Living PDX. It serves the city's southeast quadrant.

A Women's Sober Living Home in Southeast Portland

The household is women only, and the operator runs it as a separate household from its men's houses instead of splitting a single building. Bedrooms are shared and furnished. Residents are expected to be employed, studying, in outpatient treatment or volunteering, and the house holds a zero-tolerance line on alcohol, drugs and non-prescribed medication. Structure at this level is peer structure: housemates who notice a change in someone's routine before a counselor would.

How Placement Works Without a Published Address

The street address is not published, and placement runs through the operator. That is the normal arrangement for a company with several houses, and it means the first move is an application instead of a visit. It has a practical benefit worth understanding: the operator can match an applicant to whichever of its houses has an open bed and suits her circumstances, and can move her later without ending her housing.

Southeast Portland Recovery Housing and the Meeting Map

Southeast Portland carries the densest concentration of recovery meetings in Oregon. Hawthorne, Division, Powell and Foster all run east from the river with frequent bus service, the MAX Orange Line runs south along SE 17th toward Milwaukie, and Portland Community College keeps its Southeast campus at 82nd and Division. The result for a resident is that a morning meeting, an afternoon shift and an evening class can all sit on one bus line. Southeast is also where much of the city's entry-level restaurant, retail and warehouse work is, which matters for a house that expects everyone to be doing something during the day.

Oregon's Voluntary Recovery Residence Accreditation

No Oregon law requires a sober house to be licensed or accredited. The voluntary program is administered by the Mental Health and Addiction Certification Board of Oregon, and it reviews the provider behind a residence, not the building. A provider that holds it has agreed to a code of ethics, to disclosing fees and rules in writing before move-in, to keeping a documented relapse and discharge policy, and to an outside complaint process. Because the state publishes nothing at the address level, the residence agreement is where a prospective resident does the real checking.

Women's Recovery Homes and What Single-Gender Housing Settles

A women's house answers questions a coed house has to keep answering. Sleeping arrangements are settled. Bathroom and common-space norms are settled. The overnight guest rule has one obvious form. What remains for an applicant to ask about is everything else: how many women share a room, whether a house manager lives on site, how fees and deposits are handled, and whether medication for opioid use disorder is accepted in the house.
