About this Recovery House

The New Rock is a men's sober living home on Brookpark Road in Cleveland, Ohio, in Cuyahoga County. It is the flagship residence of the Ed Keating Center, a Cleveland recovery organization that has run sober living programs for men and women since 1998.

A Men's Sober House on Brookpark Road

The New Rock houses the Ed Keating Center's administrative offices alongside its three-month Sober Living Program for men, with room for up to eighty residents at a time. That scale is unusual for a single sober house, and it means a resident is rarely the only new arrival adjusting to house routine in a given week.

Structure of the Three-Month Program

The program runs on a fixed three-month cycle, a length the center sets deliberately rather than leaving open-ended. Men who complete it and want continued structure can move into the center's transitional program at its East 93rd facility elsewhere in Cleveland, so the Brookpark Road house functions as an entry point rather than a single stop.

History Behind the Ed Keating Center Name

The center takes its name from Edward J. Keating, a sports agent who overcame his own alcoholism and spent his later years helping others get sober. It was founded by Jack Mulhall, Phyllis Eisele-Curran and Dennis Eckersley, who had worked together at a Cleveland-area rehabilitation center before starting their own sober living program. Mulhall called the result the last house on the block for men who had run out of other options, and that mission has carried the organization for more than twenty-five years.

Recovery Housing in Cleveland and Cuyahoga County

Cleveland is the largest city in Cuyahoga County and the region's hub for treatment providers, courts and entry-level employment, all of which matter to a man building a life around a three-month recovery program. A Brookpark Road address keeps the West Side accessible while still reaching the rest of the county by bus.

The Ed Keating Center's Other Recovery Homes

Beyond the Brookpark Road facility, the Ed Keating Center runs a transitional men's residence at East 93rd on Cleveland's east side and Jean Marie House, a newer women's residence in nearby Brookpark. A resident who needs a different level of structure after his first three months can move within the same organization rather than starting over with an unfamiliar one.

They continue to live in the Center's sober environment while working so they can financially help themselves, as well as pay a nominal fee to help support the Center's Programs.  Sober living residents attend seven mandatory 12-step meetings each week, as a reminder “that staying sober must come first.” Also, Transitional Program residents attend mandatory after-care meetings once a week.
