About this Recovery House

Harrison House Sober Living is a men's sober living home at 1953 Richmond Terrace in Staten Island, New York, in Richmond County. It sits on the North Shore of the borough, along the Kill Van Kull waterfront in the West Brighton and Port Richmond area, and it is one of several houses run under the New York Sober Homes name.

A Men's Sober Living Home on Richmond Terrace

Richmond Terrace runs the length of Staten Island's northern waterfront, from St. George west past Port Richmond, and the house stands on that corridor. Serving men only settles the practical questions in a shared household: bathrooms, bedrooms and house meetings are single-gender, and one set of rules applies to everyone. The S40, S44 and S46 buses run the Terrace and connect to the St. George Ferry Terminal, which puts Lower Manhattan roughly twenty-five minutes away by boat and makes a Manhattan job or clinic realistic without a car.

Recovery Housing on Staten Island's North Shore

Staten Island has carried one of the highest overdose death rates of any borough in New York City for more than a decade, and the response has concentrated on the North Shore. Outpatient providers, methadone and buprenorphine programs, hospitals and the Richmond County courthouse in St. George all sit within a few miles of this address. A resident here is inside the borough's entire service network, which is not true of the South Shore.

Ferry Access From a Staten Island Sober House

The St. George Ferry Terminal is the single most useful piece of infrastructure for someone living in recovery housing on this island. The ferry runs around the clock and costs nothing, so a resident can hold a job in Manhattan, attend a meeting in Brooklyn by way of the subway, and get back at night without a fare or a car. For men leaving treatment with no savings and a suspended license, that removes the obstacle that usually decides whether early sobriety survives contact with employment.

Part of a Group of New York Sober Homes

The house is operated as part of New York Sober Homes, which runs multiple sober living locations in New York State. Belonging to a group changes what happens when a placement does not fit. A resident who needs a different household, a different neighborhood or a different level of structure can raise it with people who already know him, and a transfer becomes a conversation instead of a new application.

Certification Standards for New York Sober Living Homes

New York does not require a sober house to be certified. Two voluntary programs exist, one through the state's affiliate of the National Alliance for Recovery Residences and one under the Office of Addiction Services and Supports, and a guide to sober house certification in New York explains how each works. With no legal mandate on the operator, the checks available to a resident are the documents: a written fee schedule, a house agreement, and a stated policy for relapse and discharge.

What to Ask Before Moving Into This Staten Island Sober House

Applications go through the operator. The questions that actually describe a house are specific: what the weekly fee covers and what it does not, how many men live there and how bedrooms are assigned, whether a manager lives on site, what the curfew and testing schedule are, whether medication for opioid use disorder is accepted, and what happens to a resident's bed and deposit after a relapse. Those answers should come in writing before anyone signs.
