What sober living costs in New Mexico, and how residents pay for it

Sober living across New Mexico averages roughly $155 a week. Oxford House residents split the house's actual running costs equally rather than paying a set rent, so this home's share may be different — the house is the only source for its own figure. Statewide, median gross rent in New Mexico runs $1,067 a month. State funding such as MFA Recovery Housing Program and Linkages PSH exists for residents who cannot cover it themselves. New Mexico Health Care Authority, Behavioral Health Services Division administers that funding at state level.

How the Oxford House model works

Oxford Houses are managed day to day by their residents, funded by an equal share from each resident and alcohol- and drug-free by charter. New members are voted in by the existing membership, so the vacancy count reserves nothing.

Recovery housing standards in New Mexico

New Mexico does not licence recovery residences as facilities. Because Oxford Houses are chartered nationally by Oxford House, Inc. rather than certified locally, they seldom show on a state registry. Residents are protected by the federal Fair Housing Act and by New Mexico Fair Housing Law (Human Rights Act) (New Mexico Statutes Section 28-1-7).
