About this Recovery House

Step 1 Recovery – North Sierra Street is a men's sober living home in Reno, Nevada, in Washoe County. It has housed adult men in structured transitional recovery housing since the early 1990s.

A Men's Sober House on North Sierra Street

North Sierra Street runs north out of downtown Reno toward the university district, through a mixed stretch of older houses, small apartment buildings and the edge of the city's civic core. The house serves adult men only. Everything within a short walk or a single bus ride belongs to the machinery someone in early recovery has to deal with: the Washoe County courts, the parole and probation offices, Truckee Meadows Community College and the downtown transit center where the Regional Transportation Commission's routes converge.

Reentry and Recovery Housing in Reno

A large share of the men who come through this house arrive from custody. The organization publishes that ninety-five percent of its program graduates do not return to prison within the first year, and it pairs the housing with outpatient counseling and peer mentoring delivered by people who have been through the same thing. Reentry housing and recovery housing are usually separate systems that fail people in the gap between them, and a program that runs both together closes it.

Peer Mentoring Inside This Sober Living Program

Peer mentoring is built into the program instead of being left to whoever happens to be in the house. For a man leaving prison after a long sentence, the value is specific and unglamorous: somebody who has already navigated a parole officer, a first job application with a record on it and a first weekend with nothing scheduled. That knowledge is not something a counselor with no lived experience can supply, and it is the part of the model that has kept this house running for more than thirty years.

Certification and Funding Behind This Reno Sober House

The site is listed with a transitional housing service level in Nevada's certified behavioral health provider search, and the program is funded in part through the state's substance abuse prevention and treatment channel and the federal block grant behind it. Public funding brings reporting, audit and compliance obligations that a privately financed sober house in Nevada carries none of. That matters here because Nevada certifies no recovery residences and has licensed no halfway houses since 2023.

The North Sierra Street Sober House and Washoe County

Reno is the seat of Washoe County and the service center for the whole northern half of Nevada, from the Truckee Meadows out to the Oregon and Idaho lines. The Second Judicial District Court, the region's hospitals, the University of Nevada and the state's northern parole operations all sit in the city. A man released to northern Nevada with conditions to meet will meet most of them inside Reno, and a bed close to downtown removes the transportation problem that otherwise breaks a supervision plan in the first month.
