About this Recovery House

Smoke Ranch Sober Living Home is a men's sober house in Las Vegas, Nevada, in Clark County. It is operated by Value Housing Nevada, Inc., a Las Vegas organization that has been placing men into recovery housing in the northwest of the city for years, and it is the larger of the two houses the operator runs under its own name. Everything about the house is published in advance: the room count, the rent, the move-in cost and the sixteen rules a resident agrees to.

A Men's Sober House Off Smoke Ranch Road

The house sits near the intersection of Smoke Ranch and Decatur, in a settled residential pocket of northwest Las Vegas. Men live here, and that one restriction settles bathrooms, common space and house meetings in a single stroke. Bedrooms are shared, two men to a room across seven bedrooms, which is what holds the rent where it is and what keeps residents accountable to somebody during the hours the manager is not watching. Four bathrooms across seven bedrooms is a better ratio than most houses at this price offer, and two family rooms mean a man who needs to be out of his bedroom has somewhere to go that is not the sidewalk.

What the Smoke Ranch Recovery Home Provides

The operator publishes the fixtures of the house rather than describing them in the abstract. There is a large covered patio, secure off-street parking, secure lockers for personal belongings, five refrigerators, a WiFi-connected computer and printer, and a land-line telephone. Laundry is on site. The house is approved for house arrest, which matters to a specific and large group of men leaving custody in Clark County who need an address a court will accept before they are released.

Cost of a Room in This Las Vegas Sober House

Rent is $660 per month. A processing fee of $90 is due at move-in, making the total move-in cost $750. Rent is accepted through Cash App, PayPal, Apple Pay and Venmo. Publishing all three figures in advance does something a prospective resident feels immediately: he can work out whether he can afford the house before he calls, and there is no separate deposit waiting to surprise him.

House Rules at This Clark County Recovery Residence

Sixteen written rules govern the house, and they are handed to a man before he moves in. The core of them:

  • No drinking, drug use or paraphernalia, on site or off. Random drug tests and breathalyzers are administered, and a failed test ends the tenancy immediately.
  • Three recovery meetings a week, signed in and out on a log sheet. Parole and probation appointments do not count toward the three.
  • Attendance at the weekly house meeting.
  • Rent paid in full and on time, with a payment plan available to anyone who raises a problem before the due date.
  • Mandatory participation in house duties and chores.
  • Quiet hours from 10 PM to 6 AM, with no laundry, cooking or cleaning during them.

The rules also require that anonymity be kept, that visitors stay in the front room or family room and never be left unsupervised, and that suspected drinking or using by a housemate be reported to the manager. That last one is the rule that tells you what kind of house this is. Accountability runs sideways between residents, and not only downward from staff.

Getting Around From a Sober Living Home Near Decatur Boulevard

A bus stop on Decatur Boulevard with 24-hour service sits a quarter mile from the door, which is the single most consequential fact on this listing for a man without a car. Graveyard and swing shifts are the shifts available to someone with a recent record in Las Vegas, and a 24-hour route is what makes those shifts survivable. Grocery shopping is one block away. So is the Keystone Club, which holds AA meetings, so the three-meetings-a-week requirement can be met on foot in any weather.

Recovery Housing in Las Vegas and Clark County

Las Vegas is the seat of Clark County and holds the great majority of southern Nevada's population, its courts, its treatment providers and its entry-level employment. A man leaving detox, residential treatment or the Clark County Detention Center is generally looking for an address inside that same footprint, because the case manager, the court date and the job are all inside it. Value Housing Nevada also runs court-mandated housing for drug court defendants, parolees and men on house arrest, so a resident whose housing is conditioned on a court order is dealing with an organization that already understands the paperwork.
