About this Recovery House

Sycamore House is a men's sober living home on Gravois Avenue in St. Louis, Missouri, an independent city that serves as its own county seat. It provides housing and a structured living environment for men new in recovery from alcohol and drug dependence.

A Men's Sober House on Gravois Avenue

The house serves men only, and one gender means one set of house rules, one bathroom schedule and one household. Gravois Avenue is a major south side artery running from downtown out through Dutchtown and Bevo Mill toward the county line, and this stretch of it is dense, walkable and served by MetroBus. Groceries, pharmacies, restaurants, small employers and several meeting locations sit along the same corridor. For a man in his first sober months without a car, the address does most of the work.

How Long Residents Stay at This Recovery Home

Sycamore House does not run on a fixed clock. A resident may stay until he is capable of living life on life's terms free of alcohol and drugs, which the house describes as up to a year or longer depending on the individual. That is a longer horizon than much of the recovery housing market allows, and the length is the point. Ninety days is enough to stabilize. A year is enough to build a work history, repair a relationship and save a deposit.

Who Is Admitted to This Sober Living Home

Admission turns on three things: demonstrated need, a genuine commitment to recovery, and a reasonable prospect of success in the house. Those criteria are worth reading carefully before applying. The house is asking whether a man is ready to live under structure with other men doing the same thing, and it is not offering supervision, medical monitoring or clinical care. Residents follow house rules and take part in recovery programming while they are there.

Recovery Housing on the South Side of St. Louis

St. Louis City stands apart from St. Louis County as an independent jurisdiction with its own circuit court, health department and services. The south side neighborhoods along Gravois hold much of the city's remaining affordable housing stock and a large share of its recovery housing. A man leaving treatment or the city jail can reach the courts, the central corridor's outpatient providers and the south side's employers from this address on public transit.

What to Ask This St. Louis Sober House

Applications go to the house directly. Ask what the weekly or monthly fee is and what it covers, whether a manager lives on site, how many men live in the house, what the curfew is, whether medication for opioid use disorder is accepted, and what a relapse triggers. Missouri accreditation is voluntary through the Missouri Coalition of Recovery Support Providers, and a guide to certifying a recovery residence with MCRSP describes the standard behind those questions.
