About this Sober House

Buffalo House is a men's sober living home on Oxford Street N in Saint Paul, Minnesota, in Ramsey County, operating out of a historic building since 1999.

A Men's Sober House in a Historic Saint Paul Building

Buffalo House occupies more than 10,000 square feet in a historic structure on Oxford Street N, with six bathrooms and ten parking spaces, a scale unusual among Minnesota sober homes. The building went through an extensive interior restoration between 2010 and 2012, and the house has served more than a thousand men in early recovery since it opened.

Structure and Expectations for Residents

Buffalo House requires residents to arrive with at least thirty days of sobriety, work with an AA or NA sponsor, attend a minimum of four meetings a week, and commit to weekly service and a house chore. Residents are also expected to maintain thirty or more hours a week of employment, school, outpatient treatment or volunteering, a structure aimed squarely at people ready to rebuild a daily routine.

A Long-Running Recovery Housing Provider

Buffalo House is transitioning to nonprofit status with a board drawn from the recovery community, a shift that reflects more than two decades of continuous operation in the same Saint Paul building. That longevity is itself a form of track record in a field where many smaller operators come and go.

Located in Ramsey County

Saint Paul is the seat of Ramsey County, and Oxford Street N sits within reach of Metro Transit's bus network, the Green Line light rail, and the outpatient clinics and county services concentrated in the capital city. That access supports the thirty-hour weekly commitment the house asks of its residents.

The Buffalo house philosophy is to support our members until they are able to support themselves, thus, allowing each member to share their knowledge, strength, and life experience with other newly recovering adults. One of the core philosophies and principals of the Buffalo house is democracy, we believe that residents should have input in the environment they have chosen to explore, grow, and live in the world of recovery.
