About this Sober House

GAAMHA Transitional House is a men's sober living home in Gardner, Massachusetts, in Worcester County, run by GAAMHA, Inc., a human-services nonprofit that has provided recovery and community services in the area since 1967.

A Men's Transitional Home in Gardner

This Gardner residence serves men who have completed residential treatment and are working toward independent living. GAAMHA runs its transitional housing with full case management, a level of staff oversight the organization says sets it apart from traditional, unstaffed sober living.

A Case-Managed Path to Independence

Residents work with staff at intake to identify personal goals and build an individual treatment plan focused on recovery, employment, family relationships and community connection. That structured intake process reflects GAAMHA's broader approach: housing paired with active case management.

Referral-Based Admission

Admission is coordinated through referral from a primary treatment source, which can include a detox facility, a transitional care program, a clinical stabilization program, a shelter, a hospital or the criminal justice system. That referral structure means most residents arrive already connected to a case manager before they move in.

Gardner and Worcester County

Gardner sits in Worcester County in North Central Massachusetts, and GAAMHA has run recovery housing and services in the city since 1972. The organization also operates homes in Greenfield and Athol, giving it a footprint across the broader region beyond Gardner itself.

A Broader GAAMHA Network

Beyond this transitional home, GAAMHA runs additional residential programs including Carl E. Dahl House and Sunrise Ridge, along with a permanent supportive housing apartment complex in downtown Gardner, all under the same case-managed model.

Our Transitional Supportive Housing Program operates three sober and supportive homes in Gardner, MA.  Two of these homes are for men and one is for women. A new house for women will be opening in Greenfield, MA in fall of 2018. These homes are ideally suited to those who have completed a residential treatment program and are seeking to take the next step toward their return to independent living. Supportive Housing provides the individual the opportunity to further develop their program of recovery while learning how to balance the concerns of everyday life such as work, family, a social life, financial and personal responsibilities. The transition from treatment to independent living or a return home can be a difficult one. Supportive Housing gives the individual more freedom and privileges while providing a level of structure and accountability that facilitates growth and recovery. Unlike traditional sober living, our agency provides full Case Management services to our residents to ensure that they receive the support they need to sustain their recovery. Our Supportive Housing Case Management program is funded through a contract with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health Bureau of Substance Abuse Services, ensuring that our facilities and staff provide the highest quality of care to the individuals we serve and that our agency has a level oversight and accountability not found in traditional sober living operations.
