About this Recovery House

The Ranch is a men's recovery residence on Fingerboard Road in Frederick, Maryland, in Frederick County. The campus sits in the southeastern corner of the county in Western Maryland, near the Urbana crossroads where I-270 meets the run of farmland along the Monocacy River.

A Men's Recovery Home on a 204 Acre Campus

Men live on 204 acres, which is not what most recovery housing looks like. The property carries a 24-hour residential facility with its own dining service, a fitness center and a computer lab, and the sheer scale of the land is part of the program's design. Residents are away from the corridors and the contacts that structured active addiction, in a setting where the day has to be filled with something. The organization traces its property back to 1974, when it operated as a youth ranch. In 2015 the mission changed and the men's recovery program took its place.

The Weekly Structure at This Frederick Recovery Home

The program runs six months, and the week is scheduled hour by hour:

  • Weekly individual counseling.
  • A minimum of five mutual aid groups each week.
  • Five hours of life skills classes each week.
  • Four psychoeducational groups each week.
  • Around-the-clock residential staffing.

That volume tells a prospective resident what six months here will feel like. A man who wants a room and a light touch is a poor match. A man coming out of detox or incarceration who needs the day accounted for will find it accounted for.

Admission and Referral to This Recovery Residence

Admission runs through a professional referral, and residents must carry Maryland Medicaid. Walk-ins are not accepted. The program is neither a detox nor a rehab, so a man still in withdrawal or still needing acute care is stabilized elsewhere first and comes here afterward. For a case manager, a discharge planner or a drug court coordinator, that referral pathway is a feature: the placement is arranged between professionals who both know what the resident needs.

Accreditation Behind This Sober Living Program

The Ranch is accredited by The Joint Commission. Accreditation of that kind is a standing external review of clinical documentation, safety, staffing and resident rights, renewed on a cycle and revocable. Very little recovery housing in Maryland carries it. For a family evaluating a program from out of state, an accredited nonprofit with a public referral process and a Medicaid pathway is a materially different proposition from a private operator renting beds.

Recovery Housing in Frederick County and Western Maryland

Frederick is the seat of Frederick County and the largest city in Western Maryland, and it anchors the region's services. Frederick Health Hospital, the county health department, the circuit and district courts and Frederick Community College all sit in the city. I-70 and I-270 meet there, which puts Hagerstown, Montgomery County and the D.C. suburbs inside an hour. Men leaving this program into independent housing generally do it inside that same corridor, and staying in the county keeps a job, a sponsor and a counselor in place through the move.

Men who enter our residential recovery program work through a structure of Outpatient Therapy, Individual Counseling, 12 Step meetings, Life Skills classes and Inspirational programs. While in the program, clients are encouraged to pursue employment in the community.  They are expected to participate in the life of the Ranch, where they can set aside savings, build support inside and outside of the Ranch, and get the help they need to overcome the obstacles to living sober, independent lives in the community. Throughout their experience at the Ranch, the men are required to attend 12 step meetings nightly, such as,  Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Celebrate Recovery and Smart Recovery Meetings.
