About this Recovery House

Marian House is a certified women's recovery residence on Gorsuch Avenue in Baltimore, Maryland, an independent city in the Baltimore metropolitan area.

A Women's Recovery Residence on Gorsuch Avenue

Marian House has operated at its Gorsuch Avenue address since 1982, when Sister Margaret Beatty, then chaplain at the Baltimore City women's detention center, partnered with advocate Jane Harrison to build housing for women coming out of incarceration with nowhere stable to land. Four decades later the program has served more than 4,950 women and their children, and substance use recovery now sits alongside reentry and trauma recovery as one of its core purposes.

Transitional and Permanent Housing Under One Roof

The organization runs transitional housing for up to fifty five women at a time on site, plus a permanent supportive housing program serving roughly eighty eight women and families and a scattered site rental assistance program that places residents in housing elsewhere in the city. That range means a woman can move from crisis housing into a longer term arrangement without leaving the organization that already knows her history.

Clinical Substance Use Treatment Since 2018

Marian House added intensive outpatient substance use treatment in 2018, delivered alongside its housing instead of through an outside referral. For a woman whose recovery and her housing are tied together, having both under one organization removes a coordination problem that often derails early sobriety.

What Maryland Certification of Recovery Residence Operators Establishes

Maryland Certification of Recovery Residences (MCORR) lists Marian House, Inc. among the state's certified recovery residence operators, a status the Behavioral Health Administration grants under COMAR 10.63.08. Certification requires a published code of ethics, disclosed fees and house rules, and a complaint process that runs outside the organization itself.

Serving Women in the Baltimore Metropolitan Area

Gorsuch Avenue sits inside Baltimore City, the anchor of the Baltimore metropolitan area, close to the Johns Hopkins medical system and the city's concentration of outpatient behavioral health and reentry services. For women coming out of incarceration or crisis, that density of services within one city matters as much as the housing itself.
