Who Hillview Sober Living Serves

Hillview Sober Living is a men's house. The Maine Recovery Residence Directory published in July 2020 lists it in exactly those terms, as Hillview Sober Living, men, at 90 Atlantic St in Portland.

Men's sober living in a city the size of Portland tends to serve a wide range of people at once: men coming out of residential treatment, men leaving incarceration, men who have been in and out of recovery for years and want somewhere the terms are clear, and men who simply cannot go back to the address they were living at. What they have in common is the need for a substance-free place to sleep that does not depend on their own willpower alone.

Sober Living on Atlantic Street

The house is a residence rather than a clinical facility. It does not appear on the state's list of licensed substance use disorder residential treatment beds, which means it is sober housing and not treatment. That distinction is the single most useful thing to understand when comparing options: treatment is a licensed clinical service with an admission and a discharge, while sober living is a place to live, alongside other people doing the same thing, usually while working, attending outpatient care or both.

How Sober Housing Works in Maine

Maine sober houses vary a great deal, and the variation is mostly about structure. Some are peer-run, with residents managing the house between them. Some have a house manager on site. Certification through the Maine Association of Recovery Residences is voluntary and gives a published standard to check a house against, but plenty of houses in the state operate without it, and a directory listing is a starting point for a conversation rather than a substitute for one.

The questions worth asking any house are the same: what does the house expect of a resident week to week, is there a manager living in, how does the house handle someone who returns to use, and what does moving in actually involve. A house that answers those clearly is telling you how it runs.
