About this Sober House
Liberty Place Recovery Center for Women is a long-term recovery home for women in Richmond, Kentucky, in Madison County. It operates as a Recovery Kentucky center, one of a statewide network of transitional housing communities built for people rebuilding their lives after addiction, and Kentucky River Foothills Development Council runs it on Lake Street on the city's west side.
A Women's Recovery Home on Lake Street
Liberty Place serves women only, drawing from Kentucky's Sixth Congressional District, not from Richmond alone, and it houses up to 108 residents at a time. That scale sets it apart from a typical sober house: a resident moves through a phased program surrounded by dozens of other women doing the same work, with staff and peer mentors present around the clock instead of a single house manager.
How the Program Is Structured
Liberty Place moves residents through four stages, each with a different level of independence:
- Safe Off the Streets, a 16-bed dormitory for women in the earliest days of recovery.
- Motivational Track One, a second 16-bed dormitory focused on daily structure and accountability.
- Motivational Track Two, on-site apartments with income-based fees as residents take on more responsibility.
- Phase One and Phase Two, community-based living built around job rotations, employment and peer mentoring.
The progression gives a resident a visible path forward from the day she arrives.
The Recovery Kentucky Model
Recovery Kentucky centers are a partnership between local nonprofits like Kentucky River Foothills Development Council and the Kentucky Housing Corporation, built to combine housing at scale with peer-driven recovery support. The model asks residents to work toward employment or a service role at the center itself as they move through the later phases, which keeps the daily schedule structured long after detox is finished.
Richmond and Madison County
Richmond is the seat of Madison County and home to Eastern Kentucky University, which anchors a service economy that gives Liberty Place residents a realistic shot at work once they reach the employment phase of the program. The city sits along the I-75 corridor south of Lexington, putting Madison County recovery housing within reach of the wider Bluegrass region's outpatient providers and job market.
A Program of Kentucky River Foothills Development Council
Kentucky River Foothills Development Council is a community action agency serving Clark, Estill, Madison and Powell counties, and Liberty Place is its recovery housing program. The agency also runs other services for the same region, from housing assistance to family support, which gives Liberty Place a broader referral network to draw on than a stand-alone sober house typically has.
Certification Requirements for Kentucky Recovery Housing
Kentucky law requires certification for recovery residences, and state agencies, courts and treatment providers cannot refer someone to a house that lacks it. Recovery Kentucky centers operate under a separate state partnership, not the Kentucky Recovery Housing Network pipeline that certifies most sober houses, and a woman comparing options in Richmond should ask which framework a given address falls under before assuming the two are the same.
About our transitional recovery home
Liberty Place opened on June 30, 2008. As it is a 4 part program, the residents progress from Safe off the Streets where they live in a dormitory, into Motivational Track, where they start out living in another dorm and then move to a shared 2 person studio apartment, and then into Phase 1 which is the longest component of the program.
Phase 1 and Phase 2 (transitional) clients remain in the 2 person studio apartments until they complete the program.
