About this Sober House

Freedom House is a women's addiction recovery residence in Louisville, Kentucky, in Jefferson County, operated by Volunteers of America Mid-States. The program is built for pregnant women and mothers, allowing children to stay with their mothers while she completes residential treatment and moves into recovery housing.

A Women's Sober Living Home on Shelby Street

Freedom House sits in Louisville's Shelby Park neighborhood, close to downtown and to the hospitals and outpatient providers that make up much of Louisville's medical corridor. Volunteers of America Mid-States runs the program specifically for women, many of them pregnant or already raising children, which shapes everything from the daily schedule to the on-site services available.

Recovery Housing That Keeps Mothers and Children Together

Freedom House is built around keeping the family unit together through pregnancy, birth and early recovery, instead of separating a woman from her children while she works on recovery. That model matters for women who would otherwise face a choice between entering treatment and staying with their children, and it gives caseworkers and family courts a housing option that avoids that choice.

What Kentucky's Sober Living Certification Law Requires

Kentucky law requires every recovery residence in the state to hold certification through the Kentucky Recovery Housing Network, and it bars courts, state agencies and health providers from referring anyone to an uncertified house. That is a direct question worth asking about any specific Louisville recovery residence, Freedom House included.

Recovery Housing in Louisville and Jefferson County

Louisville is both Kentucky's largest city and the seat of Jefferson County, and that scale means Freedom House residents have access to a deep bench of hospitals, outpatient behavioral health providers and social services within the city itself. For women coming out of treatment elsewhere in the state, Louisville's size and its concentration of family and maternal health services often make it the practical choice for this kind of program.

Applying to This Louisville Sober House

Applications and referrals go through Volunteers of America Mid-States. Because the program centers on pregnancy and parenting alongside recovery, the intake questions worth asking cover prenatal and postpartum care arrangements, how long a mother and child can stay, and how the program coordinates with outside obstetric and pediatric providers.

ABOUT US Using an evidenced-based clinical services model of recovery and holistic, family-centered treatment, Freedom House addresses the cycle of addiction with children while simultaneously treating their mothers. The program offers individual, group, and family counseling; drug and alcohol dependency education; parenting classes; life skills training; nutrition classes; vocational training and employment services; and child care services. Since its creation, more than 100 babies have been born drug-free to women in the program, ensuring a healthy start to their lives.
