About this Recovery House
The Freedom House is a men's halfway house and sober living home in Fort Wayne, Indiana, on Walnut Street in Allen County, founded in 1988.
A Men's Sober House on Walnut Street
The current main house at 806 Walnut Street was built in 2004 specifically as a group living home, replacing the organization's original single property a few blocks away. It now serves as both the administrative office and the first stop for new residents, one of six properties the organization maintains on Walnut and Fox streets.
Structure From Day One
Every new resident is assigned a bed in the main house and given a written set of rules on arrival, along with a requirement to attend ninety meetings in ninety days and at least four meetings a week after that. Residents are also assigned chores, since the property doubles as a venue for outside AA and CA meetings and has to stay presentable for the public coming through.
A Recommended Stay of Six Months or More
The Freedom House asks residents to commit to a minimum stay of six months, with a recommended stay of twelve to eighteen months, and men who show sustained adherence to the rules can move from the main house to one of the organization's other properties with slightly more independence. The whole facility, main house included, houses about twenty-five men at capacity.
The Most Affordable Option in Fort Wayne
Rent runs $150 a week, covering housing and five prepared meals, with the organization willing to work with residents who cannot pay the full rate. Fundraising and grants make up the difference, which is part of how the house has kept its rate low for decades.
Recovery Housing in Fort Wayne and Allen County
Fort Wayne is the seat of Allen County and the largest city in northeast Indiana, and The Freedom House works closely with drug court programs across the region, taking referrals from residential treatment centers, detox units, hospitals and the courts. Staff members live on the property, so someone is available at nearly all hours even outside the 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. office schedule.
In the twenty five years that the Freedom House has been operating hundreds of alcoholics and drug addicts have gone through this facility and have successfully transitioned themselves from lives of addiction to become sober and responsible citizens of the community.
While we cannot guarantee that an individual will break the bonds of alcohol and/or drug dependency, we do offer a sober and supportive environment, which will facilitate the individual's recovery if he chooses to take advantage of it.
