About this Recovery House

Courage to Change Sober Living is a coed sober house in Bloomington, Indiana, in Monroe County. It holds Level II designation on the state's DMHA Recovery Residence list and is operated by Courage to Change House, founded by Michael and Tiffany Phillips.

A Coed Sober House Built by People in Long-Term Recovery

Michael and Tiffany Phillips founded Courage to Change after building nearly fifty years of combined recovery between them. Michael has worked as a certified alcohol and addiction counselor for more than two decades, and that background shows up in how the house is run: residents get a peaceful, structured environment with recovery coaches on hand, closer to a support network than a landlord relationship. The house accepts both men and women in recovery, which is less common in Indiana's sober living market than a single-gender model.

What DMHA Level II Designation Establishes

Courage to Change Sober Living is named directly on Indiana's DMHA Recovery Residence list at Level II, the tier for peer-run housing built around resident leadership instead of daily clinical staffing. Designation puts the house inside a code of ethics under the Indiana Affiliation of Recovery Residences, and it is what lets a resident use Indiana's Recovery Works program to help cover the stay.

Recovery Coaching and Peer Support

The Phillips family built the house around ongoing peer support, not a fixed clinical track. Recovery coaches are available to residents, and the couple's own history in 12-step recovery and addiction counseling gives the house a working model for what sustained recovery looks like day to day, not just a set of rules to follow.

Sober Living in Bloomington and Monroe County

Bloomington is the seat of Monroe County and the largest city in South Central Indiana, home to Indiana University and a full range of outpatient treatment providers, courts and public transit through Bloomington Transit. That combination is why Monroe County recovery housing tends to concentrate in the city itself rather than the smaller surrounding towns, and it puts a resident of Courage to Change within reach of work, meetings and school without needing a car.

ABOUT US Co-Founders Marilyn Burrus and Brandon Drake saw the need for more options for those looking for transitional  housing in Monroe County. With this in mind Courage to Change Sober Living was founded in 2016. We started with one house and now have four sober living houses--two men's and two women's. Courage to Change continues to serve those in need of low barrier, safe and sober living housing.
