National Alliance for Recovery Residences
The National Alliance for Recovery Residences (NARR)
The National Alliance for Recovery Residences (NARR) is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving access to high-quality sober living homes for individuals in recovery from addiction. By establishing national recovery home standards and providing essential support services, NARR helps create safe, structured, and effective sober living environments.
NARR serves both peer-run sober houses and licensed treatment programs, reinforcing recovery-oriented systems of care and the social model of rehabilitation. These therapeutic communities support individuals on their journey to long-term recovery.
Standardizing Sober Living Homes Nationwide
Since its founding, NARR has been at the forefront of standardizing sober living homes and residential addiction treatment programs. In 2011, NARR gathered representatives from over 40 sober homes, halfway houses, and addiction recovery organizations across the U.S. to establish best practices and policies for recovery housing.
According to NARR’s foundational whitepaper:
"Harnessing the experience and diversity of our Development Committee members best serves the many pathways to recovery. Our coalition’s unified voice influences critical issues such as funding, program evaluation, offender reentry, restorative justice, and combating housing and employment discrimination affecting millions in recovery."
NARR’s Mission and Vision
NARR’s mission is to improve access to high-quality recovery residences by offering:
- Standardized guidelines for sober living homes
- Support services for individuals in recovery
- Education and training for recovery housing operators
- Advocacy for stronger recovery-oriented policies
- Research and development in addiction recovery housing
NARR envisions a world where everyone in recovery has access to the housing and support they need to live healthier, more fulfilling lives. The organization upholds core values of hope, compassion, respect, honesty, responsibility, and fairness.
By working with federal agencies, national addiction and recovery organizations, state-level recovery housing programs, and addiction services agencies, NARR continues to expand and enhance sober living opportunities across the country.
